Preformed Hard Inverted Mantle - Lasts Longer / Burns Brighter
The top performing inverted gas lamp mantle by MHP - MTL-1 lasts longer and has a higher lumen (light out-put) value than other types. MTL-1 has a 1-1/4" O.D. #2 ceramic ring, which has three ceramic prongs that mate with the ceramic burner tip on the inverted burner assembly manifold of the lamp. The MTL-1 pre-shaped mantles are easily installed and hang suspended from the ceramic ring.
Lasts Longer / Burns Brighter
These gas lamp mantles may be used for either propane or natural gas lamps.
MTL-1 gas lamp mantles are certified for use in MHP (Modern Home Products) Gas Lamps. These mantles will also work well in many other manufacturers' gas lamp styles, such as those manufactured by Falcon, Arkla, Charmglow, Ducane, Trimble House and Gas Lite America - Gas Lite Manufacturing (GLM) gas lamps.
Handling and Installation Tips
Never touch the fabric medium of this or any other type of mantle with bare hands. Handling the mantle with bare hands can deposit oils from human skin on the fabric. Oil spots will cause the mantle to burn out in those spots and prematurely fail. Handle mantles with extreme care as they are quite fragile.
Pre-burning the Gas Lamp Mantle
With a lit match, burn off the protective coating on the mantle by touching the flame of a match to the bottom of the mantle. Do not touch the mantle with the match stick itself, since this will damage the mantle. This results in a yellow flame burning inside and around the mantle. It should be left this way for about a minute then turn the gas on full. The protective coating will burn off; this is normal. Pre-burning ignites the flammable coating which causes the support material to burn away reforming an even more brittle and delicate envelope. This pre-burning enables the mantle material to be bright burning and long lasting.
Adjusting Your Gas Lamp
For maximum brightness, turn the air sleeve slowly, opening up the air holes until the gas lamp mantle is brought to its maximum brightness. Let it burn for at least 15 minutes to check the air sleeve setting. Noise can be eliminated by closing the air sleeve slightly. If the gas lamp mantle burns with a slow, lazy flame, and spots of carbon appear on it then there may be a shortage of air. Try turning the air sleeve to open the air holes. If that does not cure a noise problem, then gas pressure may be an issue. We recommend you contact a plumber, gas contractor or your utility for service.
Most people get a supply of spare gas lamp mantles. You might want to buy more than one or two mantles. Consider the cost of shipping, your time, the life cycle of a gas lamp mantle and its cost. By ordering several mantles, you will have spares on hand for you future requirements and peace of mind.
We now have a price break where you get a dozen Gas Lamp Mantles!
