The Mosquito Magnet® Liberty
The Mosquito Magnet® Liberty is designed for the homeowner who needs to protect up to a one-acre area. As with our other Mosquito Magnet® traps, the Liberty uses our patented Counterflow Technology™ which emits a plume of CO2, heat, and moisture while simultaneously vacuuming the biting insects into a net where they dehydrate and die.

A 50-foot 12-volt power cord, supplied with the Liberty, allows placement near the mosquitoes' breeding and resting areas. The heavy-duty plastics and marine grade metals make it ideal for any harsh environments.

For best results, use the following guidelines for proper placement:
The Mosquito Magnet must be located between the breeding areas (standing water, bushes) and the 'people areas' (patio, deck) in order to capture the mosquitoes at their source, before they get to you.

Place the trap as close to the breeding area and as far away from the activity as possible. 30-40 feet is enough distance from the activity so the biting insects will be attracted to the trap and not to you.

Mosquitoes fly upwind looking for a blood meal (you). After a female mosquito bites a human, its weight is doubled; the mosquito will float back downwind to the resting area.

CO₂ is heavier than air, therefore it stays close to the ground. The mosquitoes will follow the CO₂ plume to the trap. If its placed in high grass the flow of the plume will be impeded and the mosquitoes won't find it... they'll find you!

American Biophysics offers octenol, which when used in conjunction with carbon dioxide, enhances catch rates for the Mosquito Magnet®. Our research shows that octenol can increase the catch rates of no-see-ums by 3 to 4 times.

The octenol is in the form of a packet with a peel-off top that is inserted into the Mosquito Magnet. It is recommended that the packet be replaced every three weeks.

Q: What makes the Mosquito Magnet® your only choice for controlling biting insects?
A: American Biophysics Corp. has been manufacturing effective surveillance equipment tested by the USDA and other government agencies using our patented Counterflow Technology™ for almost a decade. In consulting with these agencies we developed the only effective, consumer-friendly biting insect trap for consumer use.
Q: What attracts biting insects to us?
A: Our breath! Carbon dioxide (CO₂), moisture, and heat that result from exhaling lets the female mosquito know that there is a blood meal in the area. She will navigate to you by following the plume of CO₂.
Q: How does the Mosquito Magnet® work?
A: Mimicking human breath, a warm, moist carbon dioxide plume is produced from propane gas to attract the blood seeking insects. As the biting insects approach the source, they are vacuumed into a net where they dehydrate and die. The Mosquito Magnet® also uses Octenol, which when combined with carbon dioxide, enhances the catch rate for certain species of mosquitoes and no-see-ums.
Q: Which biting insects will the Mosquito Magnet® capture?
A: Female blood seeking insects such as mosquitoes, no-see-ums (biting gnats), black flies, and sand flies. In some regions, the Mosquito Magnet has captured the yellow biting fly.
Q: Will the Mosquito Magnet® capture bees, moths, butterflies, ladybugs or other beneficial insects?
A: No. Blood seeking insects have receptors in their maxillary palps (mouth parts) that sense carbon dioxide. Non-blood seeking insects, without these receptors, are not attracted.
Q: Where should I place the Mosquito Magnet®?
A: We recommend that you place the Mosquito Magnet® near where the mosquitoes rest (foliage) and breed (water), not near people. If placed properly the Mosquito Magnet® will draw the mosquitoes to it and away from you.
Q: How soon will I see a difference in my yard?
A: The Mosquito Magnet will begin trapping female mosquitoes immediately if placed properly in your yard. You should begin to see a difference within a few weeks. Within 4-6 weeks the mosquito breeding cycle will be interrupted, drastically reducing the population in your yard.
Q: Is it possible to dramatically reduce the biting insect population in an area?
A: Yes. 90% of the mosquitoes biting you live within 100 yards of where you are. The other 10% are brought in by the wind. (Most mosquitoes do not migrate.) They cannot detect your carbon dioxide beyond 100 yards. As the females are trapped, the generations are eliminated, thereby interrupting the breeding cycle in that area. This usually occurs after 4 to 6 weeks of continuous use.
Q: How many mosquitoes can I expect to capture?
A: The quantity of mosquitoes caught varies greatly, depending on your region's infestation level and how it is placed on your property. In tests in the Florida Everglades (high infestation) 1,500 were captured in one night. In more urban areas, catch results may be much less. A good yardstick is "Am I being bitten?".
Q: What is necessary to keep the Mosquito Magnet® running effectively?
A: The propane tank and Octenol cartridge should be replaced every 21 days. (We recommend having a full tank on-hand to swap out. The mosquitoes will quickly repopulate an area if the Mosquito Magnet is turned off.) The net should be emptied when it is half full.
Q: What other fuel can be used to run the Mosquito Magnet®?
A: Any combination of propane and butane can be used, including pure butane. Natural gas cannot be used.
Q: Is the Mosquito Magnet cost-effective?
A: Yes. Estimated propane costs are $10 - $12 per month. The new Mosquito Magnet Liberty consumes no more electricity than an electric clock.
Q: Is the Mosquito Magnet® quiet?
A: Yes. The only moving part is the internal fan, which is virtually silent.
Q: When may the Mosquito Magnet® be turned off?
A: The Mosquito Magnet ® should run continuously to catch both day- and night-biting mosquitoes until the temperature is consistently below 50º F.
Q: What is Octenol?
A: Octenol (1-octen-3-ol)* is a naturally occurring by-product that comes from plants and some animals, (pheromone and kairomone) such as oxen and cows, that ingest large amounts of vegetable matter.
