Rat Zapper

Rat Zapper
The Rat Zapper is the result of years of engineering and customer feedback. We've designed the rat zapper to be effective, clean, easy to use and humane.

Advantages
• Effective (kills mice, rats, chipmunks and ground squirrels)
• Clean (no blood or guts) and re-usable. Never touch a dead rodent again!
• More humane than snap traps, glue boards, and poison.
• Compact (10" x 4" x 4") and easy to use
• 10 rodent kills or 30 days with one set of 4 alkaline AA batteries
• Flashing kill indicator light (you never have to see the dead rodent!)
• Not an ultrasound device
• Optional Rat Tale Alerting Device tells you that "Your Rat Zapper got another one!"
• Optional remote monitoring capability for Rat Zappers.

If you have a large number of rodents to eliminate, you will probably find remote monitoring for The ULTRA Rat Zapper (found here) helpful. This system allows you to set up multiple zappers and monitor their activity from one location.

Insects
Insects like roaches, crickets and beetles can trigger the Rat Zapper. When the Rat Zapper is triggered, the high voltage runs for two minutes and then shuts itself off. After that, rodents can go in and out without getting zapped. So, if you still have rodent activity, the mice or rats will take all of the food out of the Rat Zapper and they will usually take the insect as well. Aside from the bait that you provide, rats and mice eat insects like these to survive. If you suspect insect activity, you may want to relocate your Rat Zapper or try using a roach motel to lure insects elsewhere. Also, switching to sunflower seeds (with shell on) will discourage some insects.

Moisture
Moisture can also trigger the Rat Zapper. If you suspect this is the case, you can either relocate the Rat Zapper or use a one gallon plastic food storage bag to cover the Kill Chamber. Just pull it over the Rat Zapper starting at the back end and secure the bag to the Rat Zapper with a rubber band. It's important to make sure that the battery and circuit compartments on top are both covered. If you can't relocate the Rat Zapper, you can also try covering the Rat Zapper with a large box to reduce exposure to moisture. Also, the moisture problem can sometimes be solved by cleaning.

One way to test for insects or moisture is to cover the entrance of the Rat Zapper with duct tape. Turn the Rat Zapper OFF and then ON. Leave the Rat Zapper overnight. In the morning, if the light is blinking, then insects or moisture must be the problem.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it okay to use the Rat Zapper outside?
A: The Rat Zapper works fine outdoors. We do recommend covering the Rat Zapper with a plastic bag or tarp if it is exposed to moisture, but otherwise you should be able to zap those nasty rodents in your fruit trees, on your patio, by your dog dish, on your fence, in the sub area below your house, in your barn, and all those other outdoor areas where our customers have mentioned problems.
Q: Will the Rat Zapper work on large rats?
A: Yes. The Rat Zapper is designed to work on the largest Norway rats as well as the smallest mice. If you know all of your rats are huge, we recommend the Rat Zapper 2000 because of its larger opening. If rats are an ongoing problem, you can always request a "Big Bertha" top for the RZ98.
Q: Does the Rat Zapper work for both rats and mice?
A: Yes. It works with the smallest mouse and the largest rat. If you are using the Rat Zapper for both rats and mice, we do offer a suggestion. Mice may be deterred by the smell of a rat. If you have zapped a rat and the mice are not going in, you may want to clean the Chamber with hot water and a mild soap solution.
Q: How much does a Rat Zapper cost?
A: Please refer to this page for our full selection of Rat Zapper products with pricing.
Q: Why should I use the Rat Zapper instead of other traps?
A: Other traps like snap traps and glue boards create "trap shyness" in rodents. There is visible, audible, and scent trauma associated with a death in a snap trap or glue board. Snap traps can be bloody and always cause rodent disconfiguration. Glue boards may take hours or days to kill a rodent. Do you think the others like that? With the Rat Zapper, "trap shyness" is eliminated because the kill is always instant and the rodent is left perfectly intact as though it is merely sleeping. Oh, and don't forget the mess associated with other rodent control methods. The Rat Zapper is neat and clean.
Q: How many Rat Zappers do I need?
A: For residential users, we recommend 1 Rat Zapper for every 1000 square feet of living space. For commercial users (or very large homes) with more than 50,000 sq. ft., we recommend a strategic approach. Get enough Rat Zappers to cover a "section" between 10,000 and 50,000 sq. ft. in size. Spread those Rat Zappers out over the whole complex and monitor the activity. Then, move inactive Rat Zappers to the "hot spots" as necessary.
Q: Does the Rat Zapper work on squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, moles, gophers, groundhogs, possums, raccoons, birds, cats, etc.?
A: The Rat Zapper is designed to work on rats and mice. However, we have had customers who have used the Rat Zapper to effectively control chipmunks, ground squirrels and even mongooses!
Q: How long do the batteries last?
A:
In the Rat Zapper 2000, four alkaline AA batteries will typically last for at least 30 days or 10 rodent kills.
Q: Can the Rat Zapper zap more than one rodent at a time?
A:
Every time you zap one rodent, you must dispose of it, then reset the trap by turning it OFF and then back ON.

Tips

Tips for Tricky Rats and Squirrels
When dealing with rats (as opposed to mice), always be sure to let them have one free meal before you ever turn the Rat Zapper on. Rats are exceptionally wary of new objects in their environment. Place about 4 pieces of the bait inside and slide them to the closed end of the chamber; place a few pieces about one inch inside the open end. Do not turn on the power! Go ahead and make their day with a free meal. Once the bait has been taken, replace the bait only in the back of the chamber, and now turn the power on. We call this technique "pre-baiting" or "conditioning." Pre-baiting is sort of like Russian Roulette for rodents. They never know which visit will be the last visit. This technique is also great for larger rodents like squirrels. You may need to use this technique periodically to ensure the highest effectiveness of the Rat Zapper. Remember, the rodents are in this for survival, so this is a battle of wits and we are here to help you win.

Tips for Tricky Mice
With mice, you want to keep them guessing. Keep moving the unit, turn it around, try different foods for bait. With this strategy, you will have consistent zapping over time. In addition, there is a delay in the trigger mechanism and a small, fast moving mouse may be able to get to the bait area without triggering the Rat Zapper. On his way out, he probably triggered the zapper and got launched to safety. This may occur with smaller mice, but they always come back, (mice are fairly dumb) and they will get zapped. One thing that you can do with mice to stop this from happening is to place several pieces of food directly on the Kill Plate (you can use a screwdriver to place them). Leave only about a 1/2" of the front of the Kill Plate available to the mouse. This way it will be forced to slow down and make good contact between the grounding plane and the Kill Plate.

General Tips
For extremely dry conditions, you may want to try placing a moist cloth in front of the Rat Zapper. This will wet the rodents feet, making the rodents easier to detect. This will also ensure that the maximum energy goes through the rodents body.

If you find the Rat Zapper with a blinking light, no dead rodent, and all of the food gone, one of the following things may be the problem.

Cleaning the Zapper

Cleaning the Zapper
Caution: before cleaning the Rat Zapper, remove all batteries for safety!

1. If you hear buzzing when you turn the Rat Zapper on, please start here:
Take the Rat Zapper into a dark room and turn it on. If the buzzing starts, you should see sparking. Wherever you see a spark arcing across the gap that surrounds the Kill Plate, that is where you should clean. Please continue to read for specific cleaning instructions.

2. If you do not hear buzzing when you turn the Rat Zapper on, please start here:
If you look inside the Rat Zapper, you will see a small metal plate that looks like an island in the floor of the Kill Chamber. You may also notice that there is a half inch gap that surrounds the small metal plate. For your Rat Zapper to operate at maximum efficiency, you must ensure that this gap is clear of debris or residue on all four sides. Debris or residue in this gap can trigger the Rat Zapper and it can also draw energy away from a rodent.

We recommend that you purchase an inexpensive thin aluminum pan approximately 2 inches deep and large enough, in width and length, to accommodate your Rat Zapper. A soft bottle brush should also be purchased. These items can commonly be found in the cookware section of your local supermarket.
After purchasing these two items, we suggest that you mix dishwater detergent with warm/hot water and simply immerse the bottom of your Rat Zapper in the solution. Allow the Rat Zapper to sit in the mix for approximately 1 hour to loosen any debris and other material that may have accumulated. After the unit has remained for the approximate 1 hour, gently brush the bottom of your Rat Zapper out and then allow a gentle stream of fresh water to flow over the cleaned bottom surface of your Zapper. Do not spray the unit out or allow moisture to intrude into the electronics that are housed in the top section of your Rat Zapper as this may cause the electronics to short out and impair the performance of the unit.
After the bottom of the Zapper is thoroughly cleaned, simply stand the unit on end (with the open end of the unit on the bottom) to accelerate the drying process. When the Rat Zapper is completely dry, put it back into service.

If you find that the bottom metal plate of your Rat Zapper has become corroded or has a mineral buildup we recommend that you immerse the bottom of your Rat Zapper in approximately 1 1/2" of distilled white vinegar. Let your Rat Zapper sit in the vinegar solution for 3 hours and then gently scrub out the bottom with a soft brush until completely clean. If you have rubber gloves available, after the scrubbing you can wipe the metal surfaces clean with a paper towel. If you are preparing to reach inside your Rat Zapper with a gloved hand, please insure that you have removed all batteries from your unit first. When you have completed all cleaning activities, allow your Rat Zapper to fully dry. This procedure should remove both debris and mineral buildup on the metal portion of your Rat Zapper and your Zapper can be placed back in service.

If you are dealing with rats, always use our "pre-baiting" procedure after cleaning.

Also, if you look inside the Rat Zapper and the Kill Plate is not shiny, there may be a layer of dust or dirt there. This layer of dust or dirt can act like electrical insulation and it may prevent all of the energy from getting to the mouse or rat. In fact, it may prevent the Rat Zapper from even being triggered. Remove the batteries from the Zapper, and wipe the Kill Plate clean with a dry paper towel.

Battery Information

Battery Information
This section is designed to help you get the most from your Rat Zapper. We are keeping our eye on new, evolving battery technology to help you get the best bang for your buck when buying batteries for your Rat Zapper.

Battery Life and Recommendations
The best battery to use in the Rat Zapper is the Energizer AA Lithium battery. The only disadvantage to this battery is that they can be expensive. However, their performance in the Rat Zapper is exceptional. With one set of Lithium batteries you can eliminate approximately 30 rodents. They can last up to 3 months of 24/7 service. The next best choice is either Duracell Ultra or Energizer e2 Titanium.
If you can't find Duracell Ultras, or Energizer e2 Titanium, the next option is the regular Duracell Copper Top batteries or regular Energizer batteries. Almost any type of alkaline battery should work fine, but if you want the best success with the Rat Zapper, get the best batteries.
With 4 fresh, new, alkaline AA batteries, you will get up to 10 kills or 30 days of usage. If you zap 5 rodents in 15 days, it may be time for a replacement.

Conservation Tip
When your alkaline AA batteries are no longer powerful enough to be used in the Rat Zapper, there will usually still be plenty of juice to run other devices that require less energy (such as calculators, remote controls, electronic clocks and timers, etc.)

Rechargeable Batteries
The best batteries to use in the Rat Zapper are regular, non-rechargeable lithium or alkaline batteries. We do not recommend rechargeable batteries at this time.

Becky Raiti says: From: "Joe, Becky, Frankie and Nicholas" Subject: It works! Thank you so much for a wonderful product. I was skeptical, but after reading the wonderful testimonials, I decided to shell out the big bucks for the Rat Zapper 2000. I couldn't wait to get my first victim. I had noticed mouse droppings in the garage, but didn't act quickly enough. Once I found droppings in our basement, the war was on. The Rat Zapper arrived yesterday, and I couldn't wait to see the red light blinking on the unit. I got our first field mouse last night. I was really squeamish about emptying it. Can you imagine if I actually had to deal with a squished mouse from a snap trap or a wriggling one on a glue board? I have two small children and thought this would be the safest way to eliminate the problem and I love it! It was so easy to empty the dead mouse into a trash bag and I didn't even have to look at it. Thanks again, Becky Raiti 7/24/2005 4:04:43 PM
Anonymous says: I just purchased a second rat zapper 2000. I have never seen anything like it. The feeling you get when you try a product and it works like it says it does is great. I had a problem with mice taking over my home. After going over the house with a fine tooth comb I found that they were crawling up the pipe from my flood pump and also getting in from the clothes dryer vent. After altering these areas to prevent entry, I put the rat zapper 2000 to the test. 27 mice in one weekend. I have never seen another mouse in the house again. I have purchased this second zapper for my father. He lives in the mountains of upstate PA and has been finding mice in his basement. They are so small that they get away with the bait on standard traps. Wait till the meet the rat zapper 2000, they wont stand a chance. I know he will be as happy with it as I am. DIE MICE DIE!!!! Anonymous says: I love the Rat Zapper. I have squirrels in my attic and I didn't want to fool around with a live trap. I put the Rat Zapper up there with a Rat Tale. It took a week for them to find the bait. Got the first squirrel on Saturday, got a second one three days later. Great product! Bob McLean 7/24/2005 4:09:33 PM
