The General fuel oil replacement filter # 1A-30, may be used as a replacement fuel oil filter for use with oil fired heating equipment with the following fuel oil filter assemblies:
- General - # 1A25A, Fuel Oil Filter assembly
Responding to the growing use of fuel oil for home heating, the Redner family of Detroit, MI introduced their first fuel oil filter for the home market in 1937.
Since then, the market has changed. Higher efficiency furnaces with smaller nozzle sizes place increasing importance on the quality of oil delivered to the burner.
General Filters, while still a family-owned business, continue to lead the industry with UL-listed fuel oil filters and replacement elements designed to protect today’s advanced technology heating systems and assure your customers’ comfort and satisfaction.
The high cost of ECONOMY
It’s tempting – save a few pennies with filters and replacement elements that are “just as good as” General products in an attempt to pad the bottom line. Some dealers might gamble by:
• Using less than the best filter or, even worse, non-UL listed products like some spin-on types
• Using replacement elements not recognized by UL for use in a specific filter
• Using non-UL listed gasket material that could swell and leak
While these efforts at economy may produce marginal short term benefit, they frequently lead to expensive “no-heat’’ call backs and costly spill clean ups that quickly erase any savings.
RISKY BUSINESS: non-UL listed gaskets
All General gaskets are made from UL-specified materials where applicable and conform to all UL construction and performance specifications. It’s your assurance that they will perform as expected.
In comparison tests, gaskets made from non-UL listed materials experienced significant deformation which could contribute to leakage and result in costly call-backs to clean up spilled oil.
Surface vs Depth Filtration – THERE’S AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE
Surface filtration depends on the availability of a large surface area of porous screening media to trap contaminants. Among the different surface filtration media are:
• Wire screen refills
• Paper as found in spin-on filters
• High Density cellulose acetate media used in knock-off filters and elements.
These filters rely on “surface loading” to trap contaminants and, depending on oil quality, may not have enough surface area in the size filter commonly found in most homes to provide sufficient protection for an entire heating season.
Depth filtration – the General preferred technology – uses a relatively large volume of porous filtering media to capture contaminants at various depths deep within the filter element as the fuel oil passes through on its way to the pump. Felt filters featuring this type of construction provide maximum contaminant loading and long service life.
A WORD ABOUT UL and other approvals
The latest edition of Underwriters Laboratories Standard 296 (Fuel Oil Burners) requires a UL-listed oil strainer be installed with the burner. Additionally, each burner must have a label or statement in the installation instructions to this effect. A UL listing for fuel oil filters includes specified replacement elements and gaskets as part of the UL requirements. Using other than recognized replacement parts in most cases voids the UL listing and is a violation of codes and standards that reference Underwriters Laboratories.
General QUALITY IS BUILT IN
General fuel oil filters and replacement elements are designed and manufactured to meet the performance requirements of today’s high efficiency fuel oil heating systems.
Important features include:
• Pressure tested construction with precision machined gasket seals
• UL recognized gasket compounds assure a tight seal from the factory and when using genuine General replacement elements for service in the field
• High quality wool felt elements for exceptional depth filtration down to 10 microns
• Ten micron filtration satisfies requirements of even the smallest commonly used burner nozzles
• Precision-machined cast iron head for durability and installation ease
• Low pressure drop across the filter assures proper operation of almost any system
• Blue bonding treatment of center core in felt elements eliminates lint migration
• Unique step design, in felt and gear tooth design for rayon, pioneered by General, has the largest combination of surface and depth filtration for maximum contaminant trapping capacity
• Components recognized by Underwriters Laboratories
• Long-life, painted, heavy-duty steel canister
• General replacement elements are included as part of the UL listing for General filters.
