Find the master shutoff valve.
The master shutoff valve turns off the water to the entire house. Learn its location and make sure everyone in your household knows where it is. The Master Valve is usually located on the pipe system where the water service enters your house. You may want to operate the valve to become accustomed to how the valve operates and to check to see if you and others can work the valve from the open to closed position, you'll be checking the valve to find out if is operable and not stuck. Valves that are not used for long periods of time may experience mineral build-up and become difficult to turn.
If the water service valve is inoperable or located in an inaccessible place consult with a professional plumbing contractor about installing a new easy to operate service shut-off valve, ball valves with drains are now very popular as they are easy to turn and the drain “waste” feature allows for easy evacuation of water in the line should the line need to be serviced or to be winterized –dry. Your plumbing contractor can do a number of things; another is to put a shut off valve in a more accessible spot or installing an electronically operated shut off valve that can be operated remotely, by the push of a button.
It is critical to be able get to this valve quickly and to then be able to get the valve shut-off quickly and easily if a pipe should burst. The faster the water service valve it is shut off the less water damage may occur to your property and belongings.
Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses.
Detach your hose, detaching the hose from the silcock valve is of up-most importance in preparing for cold weather.
First lets establish the term - Silcock. A silcock valve is the name for the valve (some may call it a faucet - it's not) on outside of your home that a hose is designed to attach to.
Detaching the hose allows water to drain from the "silcock" valve, so a freeze doesn't burst the faucet, valve or the pipe it’s connected to.

Mansfield 400/500 Series Wall Hydrant Vacuum Breaker Replacement Kit
Mansfield by Prier O.E.M. parts.This service kit has the proper repair parts to fix the problem of dripping water from the anti-syphon vacuum breaker cap on a Mansfield 500 series frost free sillcock hose valve. The Vacuum Breaker is the safety device on the frost-free sillcock. Service Kit Includes 1 bonnet, 1 Plunger Assembly, and 1 Vacuum Breaker Cap. The cap we supply is Gray Plastic. The diameter of the plastic cap is 1-1/2 inches at it's widest point.
Includes:
- One (1) Vacuum Breaker Cap
- One (1) Vacuum Breaker Body
- One (1) Vacuum Breaker Plunger
Tools Needed:
- Two (2) Screwdrivers
- Pair of Pliers
Installation Instructions:
- Shut off the plastic valve using the handle.
- Pry the old plastic vacuum breaker cap off by using the two screwdrivers, one on either side of the valve, positioned underneath the cap.
- Use pliers to remove the old vacuum breaker bonnet by turning counter clockwise.
- Remove the old vacuum breaker plunger assembly. Note that the rubber seal and the center plastic pin are pointing upwards.
- Set new vacuum breaker plunger assembly in place. Note that the rubber seal and the center plastic pin are to be pointing upwards.
- Assemble the new plastic vacuum breaker bonnet by turning it clockwise with the pliers. The plastic bonnet needs to be tightened firmly, but not over tightened.
- Press the new plastic cap squarely and firmly straight down over the new bonnet.
To Assure Drainage of Sillcock Valves, Disconnect Hose.
Turn sillcock handle to the closed position and detach the hose from the spout of the Mansfield Sillcock during freezing weather. If a hose is left attached, the frost-proof silcock cannot drain properly and trapped water will freeze and damage the sillcock.
The frost-proof sillcock assures no-freeze operation because the valve mechanism shuts off water inside the building, where it is (assumed to be and necessary to be) heated. If the building will be unheated for any length of time, then all water lines should be drained and plumbing fixtures winterized.
Operating Instructions:
- During freezing conditions to assure drainage of sillcock valves, always disconnect hoses promptly after use!
