How to Apply a Sealz-It Fiberglass Wrap Pipe Repair Kit
- First, depressurize the water line. This means that you will need to turn the water off and open a faucet or release valve to allow the built up pressure in the pipes to be released.
- Then clean the pipe area to be repaired. If there is corrosion on a metal pipe, sand or wire brush the corroded area to create a smooth, clean surface. It may be necessary to sand plastic pipes as well in order to make the pipe smooth.
- Put on the gloves supplied in the kit.
- Tear open the foil pouch and add water.
- Move the tape around gently in the water to coat it thoroughly with water. The water activates the chemicals impregnated in the tape to harden.
- At this point, you want to work quickly but smoothly. Take the tape out of the pouch and, beginning about an inch from the end of the break, wrap the tape snugly around the pipe moving it back and forth over and beyond the break at least an inch on either side.
- As you get towards the end of the roll you will notice the chemicals begin to thicken. Pull the tape very snugly as you finish wrapping.
- Open the tube of oil and sprinkle on the wrap. Smooth the tape out in the direction that you wrapped it around the pipe.
- When you have finished wrapping, you should have 6 to 8 wraps over the pipe for optimal sealing. (More than one kit can be applied to cover the project area adequately.)
- Allow the tape to harden 20-30 minutes before repressurizing the pipe.
